all opinions welcome :)

Hey guys,

finally got the block in the car, and moving along steadily.
excited ..it could run this weekend !!

now,

I feel like I need a 2nd or 3rd opinion on the
setup and how it will perform .. along
with recommended line-up changes.

Ive heard good and bad things about 305 heads on
a SB 350, and to be honest .. im kinda paranoid about it.
(never done it)

I basically wanna know if the cam selection is appropriate
and ill be happy..

and estimated HP/TQ #'s..

Fresh, rebuilt (by us)

1989 5.7L TPI L98:
rebuilt & ported 081 5.0L 58cc heads,
Crane 1.6rr's,Comp cams high energy lifters,
Crane Hydraulic roller camshaft:
(282/282 .465/.465)
SLP shorty headers, y-pipe,
Flowmaster 30series exhuast,
ported intake, plenum and runners,
holley AFPR, useless airfoil ...
MSD coil and ignition, custom CAI,
moroso high volume oil pump,
TH-700r4, B&M shift kit, corvette servo,
89 vette oil cooler,
alum. driveshaft backed by
some 3.73s ???

I'll get the dialog going, I think most stock heads, even ported, will perform better with a dual-pattern cam to mask the shortcomings of the exhasut ports. Aftermarket heads like AFR which have good i/e ratio can perform will with a single-pattern cam.

If you haven't started n the 081's yet, may want to compare cost to rebuild ythem, put bigger valves and port (either your time or money) to something like WP or Dart that are new, flow better out of the box and already have bigger valves.

Money was tight at first ..

then the whole project devoured me whole.
Im knee deep my friends..

its still not to late to go with bigger valves,
but the 081s are fresh with new springs, cups, PC seals,
everything except valves .. they are indeed stock

so im hesitant on doing whats been done..

thanks for the reply
great advice

personally i belive that the gain in compression will not benefit you much due to the loss in flow. If you did some port work and had bigger valves in them then it would help. but if you cannot do this yourself (besides the valves) it would be cheaper port the 083 and run a thinner head gasket(i.e. Mr. Gasket # 1134). The gasket has a compressed heighth of .023 as opposed to .039 from stock.

I'd go with a bigger cam...

Be careful about more cam with stock-rebuilt heads. With 1.6's and the lift you've chosen, yuo're going to get close to smacking the valve boss'es. More cam only increases the danger.

sorry for the delayed response
... Ive been away

I exchanged the 1.6rr's for some 1.5s.
will this allow me to run more came in the future?
I was a bit worried so I went along with the exchange.

ill more than likely go with some aftermarket aluminum
heads in the near future as well.
choices are unclear, but I have plenty of time.

also,
nobody projected HP and TQ numbers.
what can I expect from this current setup.

dont worry, performance isnt what Im aiming for right away...
just a car that runs correctly

most newbies overlook that part.
