Need help after intake manifold swap.. HELP PLEASE!

I have a 92 firebird TBI, i bought an edelbrock TBI manifold..

After the swap, I'm having trouble starting the car.

It cranks then almost backfires and then cranks again.

Should the distributor harnessess be pointing towards the firewall or towards the engine?

Could the distributor be like 1 tooth off and causing this? I marked it but it had to be dropped in a few times and it finally hit the mark..

What do you guys think?

I really don't want to work on this anymore, i've been doing it all day..

I'm stumped..

Torwards the firewall. the number 1 and 8 terminals should be almost parallel to the front of the car.

Thats where I had it pointing...

What could it be?

I've taken the distributor out so many times now, I'm not even sure where the rotor is supposed to point...

This is very frustrating...

Can anyone offer some advice?

Get the engine so that #1 is at top dead center and set the timing from there, always the easiest way to get it right. Your timing is probably too advanced.

I got the car to start finally, I think it is set at TDC now but I am not sure... THe first time, it cranked then sputtered, so I moved the distributor clockwise and now I just have an idle that goes up to like 2000 then comes back to 1500 and stays there.. I have a service engine light on too...

what should I check?
