I have seen petroleum jelly (Vasoline®) and grease both used successfully.

When I needed something to protect the terminals, I had the best results with the spray (can't remember the name) made specifically for this. It is (was?) sold at most auto parts stores. This seems to do the best job (in my experience). But grease is an effective (cheap) alternative.

dielectric grease is what you should use... it's conductive grease..

CRC Battery Terminal Protector. 7.5 oz. red and black can, red spray. It's a crossover from the diesel arena (big rigs). Red spay dries nicely, no corrosion. Good stuff, however, I have problems locating it in auto parts stores, so I go to my friends shop and 'borrow' some. Someone told me that some of the Autozones carry it as well as some of the smaller parts places.
