HELP!!! 3 hours to fix
HELP!!! 3 hours to fix
Ok, so my car won't start (91 stock TBI 305), the other day I was driving and it was struggling, wanting to die at idle. It's been raining, So I've checked the fuses, none blown, sounds like the fuel pump is pumping, but I don't see the fuel coming from the injectors, Just throw some suggestions my way pleaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasssssse
About to try replacing cap, rotor, and wires
Thanx

hmm, how would I go about fixing that, I mean, I put some Fuel injector cleaner in the tank, but it WILL not even tap. Not one catch. So..... I've barely undid the in-fuel line, gas seeped out. I Changed the Distributor cap, Rotor, and HEI module. And while it turns over no catch, no hit, not even when I spray a little WD-40 in the intake manifold. So... my guess is somewhere I'm not getting spark. What else can I do?

Easy way to test for spark is to hook up a timing light. No light, no spark.
Pull the plugs and see if they're wet with fuel. Change 'em. Get new wires. If you still don't have any luck, you may have a bad pick up. All this stuff is cheap, and worth changing, even if your problem is elsewhere.

Ok, so I know I keep changing things. I've checked for spark. It's there. What I have done now is to carefully pour a glass of gas into the throttle body as my girlfriend turned it over. And it would run as long as I was pouring. So....... clogged fuel injectors? I've already put fuel injector cleaner in. What else could it be. I've checked for fuel, and it seems to be sending from the tank. Any more suggestions?

i agree with rezinn. i would try to change the fuel filter first if you already haven't done so.

no the fuel filter is inline and externally mounted. try looking for it underneath the drivers side of the car. It is cylinder shaped, mounted horiziontally, it has a metal line coming from the tank and another exiting out sideways towards the front of the vehicle.

When you turn the key do you hear the fuel pump pumping? Also if you want check the fuel rail on the passenger side and look for the pressure relief and see if you have gas coming out of there, there will be a black cap that looks like the caps on a inertube on a bicycle...use a rag to be sure it doesn't spray all over the place...if you hear pressure release then the pump is working
So I was changing my fuel filter and it really didn't seem to be clogged, so I turned on the ignition... NO spray of fuel under the car, that's what should have happened right, So the Fuel pumps gone huh?
So I guess what I want to know is, is it really so hard to change out the fuel pump, plus it's been raining unbelievably, is there somewhere I could check for a short, even though there are no blown fuses

Yes, the fuel pump is a horrifying ordeal to change. I'm not to familiar with TBI, but an electric pump has to have a fuse and relay. Change these first, then check for fuel again. Most likely it's the relay ($13...30 seconds to change).

the pump isn't "that" hard to replace, it's just time consuming. theres nothing really difficult about it. With the help of a couple friends and about a days worth of free time it can be done. But make sure you check all the relays and connections first. For my IROC, the relay is mounted near the battery on the fender wall. not sure if it's the same for yours or not. Also check the connection near the rear end. Its mounted up on the underside of the body near the front of the gas tank.
good luck,
Eric

to change the pump on my TPI car, the rear axle had to be dropped. I'm not sure if you can get away with the axle just hanging by the shocks fully extended, because when I did mine, we completely removed the axle to do some work on it.
But once the axle is out of the way, you'll have to disconnect the fuel lines, and eventually the fuel tank.
