New old problems with the car

ok, now that i got to car to run smooth and idle at around 1300 I still have a few problems. Any answers would be apricated.

1) How do I lower the idle?

2) I have to force the fan on by grounding out the sensor wire between cyl 6 and 8, and what does that sensor do?

3) why won't my temp and oil press. gauges work, what sensors are they connected to?

4) I ripped up my pass rocker panel does anyone have a black Z28 one?

5) what determins when the second fan comes on any why won't it come on.

6) My T-Tops leak b/c the seal in the rear of them does not contact the t-top so if i put a rubber strip there it would compress the seal and make a good one right?

if you have a carb, lower the idle by turning the idle screw(drivers side, toward front of carb(and car))

that sensor is the fan switch. it grounds the wire once it reaches a certain temp(225 degrees) and ungrounds it at a lower temp(200 maybe)

I think the second fan comes on when the ac is on

you should get new ttop weatherstrip, because the rubber won't fix that problem all te way most likely

you probably need new senders for the 2 guages, if they aren't working at all.

about the diagnostics, take a paper clip and connect it to the #1 and 2 terminals of the little black box on the right side of the driver's side dash, on the bottom of it. this will flash your codes.

.,.,.,.,

Assuming a TPI car here? Would guess the high idle is related to the IAC, TPS or vacuum leak.

2) I have to force the fan on by grounding out the sensor wire between cyl 6 and 8, and what does that sensor do?

.,..,.,.,.,

That's the 2ndry fan relay switch, which in my '89 (and many others on this board) when you short that wire to ground BOTH fans will come on. The factory setpoint is very high on that fanswitch, in the area of 240+*'s. This is the FS that most of us have changed to a lower setting FS (along with a lower Tstat) to decrease our idling/stop and go driving temps.

3) why won't my temp and oil press. gauges work, what sensors are they connected to?

.,.,.,.,.,.,.,

Temp gauge for the dash is located between #1 and #3 plugs, and can be seen from the top of the engine, it'll have a single wire connector to it (yours may be missing?) Oil pressure sending unit is located above the oil filter on my '89, IIRC, not behind the intake.

4) I ripped up my pass rocker panel does anyone have a black Z28 one?

5) what determins when the second fan comes on any why won't it come on.

,.,.,.,..,..,.,.,.

Well, the primary fan in my car is on the driverside, 2ndry on the pass side. Primary is controlled via temp setting in the EPROM...on at about 235*, off at 220*. ECM get's it's temp read from the CTS located at the front of the intake, since yours is an '87, you have a Cold Start Injector, you'll also see it's control very close to the CTS.

Since one fan comes on when you ground the 2ndry switch, you need to see if it's the primary fan or the 2ndry fan coming on. Each have their own relay...on my '89 I think the primary relay is in front of the battery, the 2ndry relay to the pass side fender side of the battery..but kinda back a few inches...look in those location for two relay sockets with the same p/n's, switch the relays, see if the other fan comes on, if it does, you need another relay, if not, possibilities become more...since it seems as if you have a wiring nightmare left to you by the PO?????

6) My T-Tops leak b/c the seal in the rear of them does not contact the t-top so if i put a rubber strip there it would compress the seal and make a good one right?

yeah, but if the relay was busted then the primary fan would not have come one by itself, the secondary fan comes on when i ground out that wire to the sensor between 6 and 8, so i think i mught need a new sensor, maybe i will get a colder one, umm, now i maybe shutting of the engine thinking it is getting too hot before it reaces 235 for the pri fan to come one, b/c like a said before it has come one by itself, now if i could only get the gauge to work.

There is a tech article here about setting the idle, minimum air, and TPS on TPI cars.

thanks for the info and does anyone know what to do to fix these problem?, i finnaly got the car to idle at 800 rpm or so and now i am setting the timing on it, i think that since it is a brand new engine i will set it at 6* and maybe move it up some. The only problem is that my father and i are having a hard ime setting it so he said we could do it like he used to when he was a mechanic, just advance it untill it pings then back off and then back on and off untill it pings only under a load, like accel up a hill are around a corner. what do you guys think

EDIT: I am also thinking about getting rid of the lowering springs sometime, it is too hard to drive this damn car around here, i am looking for a good set s IROC springs or some upper performace stock f-bodie springs. I will start to take this car to the drags and lowering doesn't help much, but i like the way it looks......?!
