cold start problem
cold start problem
Lately my '89 Formula with a 350 TPI and 120,000 miles has been very hard to start cold, It usually take a couple(4-5) tries to get to run. It will start up and die right away. I replaced the old dist. cap & rotor, but that didn;t solve the problem. I searched the boards but didn't find anything. What else should i look for? clogged EGR?? bad Temp. sensor???
I have little spare time and money anymore since I just had a kid. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jason

Could it be the cold start valve on the fuel rail? Is that the same as the cold start injector on earlier TPI systems? Has anyone had to replace a cold start valve before? What were the problems?
Thanks

Yes, It was the dreaded fuel pump. My old pump was only producing about 24 psi. (about 10 psi under spec.) I just finished the PITA job yesterday. All I have to say is - what was GM thinking?...

It was bad. Do a search on fuel tank removal and I'm sure you'll find many posts on the subject. I went with a GM pump for about $150. Don;t even think of buying a cheap pump, it was way too much work to have to do it again. I also had to buy a new strainer ($6) and new sway bar links($12) that I broke getting them off. Be absolutely sure you need a pump first, check your fuel pressure at the fuel rail, you should have 34-47 psi, i think.

i feel you on the fuel pump removal i had to enjoy the pleasure of doing that and the cold start for me was the cold start injector.
