how hard is it to replace the egr valve.

My car has beem in and out of the shop a few times these last couple weeks trying to figure out what was wrong because my SES light comes on. First it was the egr controller, O2 sensor, and choke pull-off. But the light still came on, to make a long story short, the egr is lazy. Meaning that it isn't functioning 100%. They said the part is $80 plus about $30 labor. Does this seem unreasonable? think I'd be better off doing it myself?

If your car has a carb, it should be simple. I'm not sure about efi. Just be sure to get all the old gasket off, if it had one. Otherwise it may not seal good.

Is your EGR valve on the top of the engine?

If so $30 for labor sounds fair if you are lazy. Its not that difficult to replace.

I would check around to verify that $80 part price though.

Ive been working on camaro's since 83. I'm ase master certified and certified in performance from chevrolet. I have never heard of a "lazy" egr valve. I think you need a new garage.

Depends where the egr is. I already R&R'd the egr on my Caprice, no problem. But on my 88 GTA the egr is buried under the plenum, lots of labor. Sounds like you egr is easy to get to ( $30 labor) . I found egr valves at AutoZone for way less than $80. I think they were $49 . But some people say you simply must get the original oem gm egr in order to have it work right.... and they cost more....
