Found some gears, now need input
I found these gears on ebay w/ this description
"82-92 Camaro Iroc Z-28 3.73 Gears. These gears will fit any 82-92 Camaro Iroz Z28 Firebird Trans Am with a 7.5" 10 bolt. This is a hard to find higher Gear Ratio. Most cars come with a much lower, this will help your car really get up and go off the line." It came w/ a pick and it looks to be in awesome condition. But, will this work on my car? I think it will but it throws me off cause the 10bolt and ****, and like i've stated numerous times before, i'm an idiot. But if these will work, i'm gonna jump on em cause they are cheap right now...thanx

Those gears will fit your car. The 90+ RS's were 10 bolt 7.5" rear cars. You might also want to get a Posi http://www.slponline.com/view_produc...TNUMBER=64501T from SLP while your in the rearend.

The description sounds like the right thing for these cars. The hype in the ad is a bit overblown. The gears are quite easy to find new. Maybe they're hard to find used, I don't know about that, I can't imagine why anybody would want to go through all the trouble and expense of installing gears, and put all those dollars at risk by trying to save pennies that way.
A set of new gears is just under $200. If you have to pay any more than about $50 it's probably not worth it.

So you think I should buy new? I'm positive now that I wanna get gears for my car. Now, the problem i've across is this. I called up about 3 transmission places today and only one said they could install the gears (i didnt even ask how much it would cost to put possi on there either...crap, oh well). The trans shop that told me they could quoted me 800 bucks (he was including the parts, i.e the gears). I told him I would be supplying the gears then he dropped his price to 300 just for the install......does that sound about right or should i keep looking around? I dont wanna get ripped off, but at the same time I'd like to get these gears and possi (which i probably should as long as i'm having work done back there anyway)...why must i want so many things for my car....sigh. I really appreciate all the help you guys have been giving me, I've always loved my car and now that I can afford to mod it up, i love it even more. I know I ask a lot of questions but my car will be **** once i get done w/ it. Thanx

Used gears are always a chance. You never know how they have been treated. It's very hard to look at a set of gears to see what kind of shape they are in(unless it's obvious of course). Assuming these are factory 3.73's, you will need a 3 series carrier as well. I wouldn't pay much for them. Even then if you spend the money on the install and posi and then the gears come apart you end up paying for the install again and maybe another posi. New 3.73's, SLP take-off limited slip(posi) or powertrax locker, and all new bearings.

They will NOT fit "any 82-92 Camaro Iroz Z28 Firebird Trans Am with a 7.5" 10 bolt"! They were made for either a 2- or 3-series carrier (3-series if factory, like 82camaro said), so may or may not fit your carrier.
You'd be much better off taking your car to a driveline shop and having them get the gears, posi if needed, and set it all up for you. You're probably looking at close to a grand if you need the posi.

$300 to install, with the rear in the car, drive-in to drive-out, is a pretty good price.
You'll need to supply a set of gears (duh); a posi unit (you'll have to have some kind of a carrier no matter what, or you'll have to get the special gears to co on your 2-series one-legger, which IMHO is dumb); a "gear install kit" which contains the pinion & carrier bearings (4 total), a handful of shims, a crush sleeve, and some other misc stuff; and fluids. Now would be a great time to get the axle bearings swapped out since it takes about 10 minutes to do those when everything else is out, and the parts are about $25 (2 bearings & 2 seals).
You have either 2.73s if you have an auto or 3.08s if you have a 5-speed; you won't believe you're in the same car the first time you step on the gas.

Why is it 'dumb' to get 3.73's for a 2 series carrier--it's just a little bit thicker. Mine's been that way for years.

Because if you do that, you can't use the cheap posi, nor most of the other better posi units because they don't make them for grocery-cart gears, and by extension, for the adapto gear sets... other than that, there's nothing wrong with it, it just makes more sense especially in cases where you have an inferior (non-posi) carrier to begine with, to get the right carrier and the right gears to go with it.

It may be cheaper and easier just to swap
in a whole new rearend with a 3.23 or 3.42
and factory posi.Lots of guys put the gears
in wrong and when they howl they try to blame it on a defective part. There is nothing worse than dropping a grand on a rearend and driving away unhappy.

My rearend came w/ a 2 series Posi, so "special" 3.73's was a SMART move. It just depends on your situation. If you have NO posi, then get a 3 series posi, and regular 3.73's, it only makes sense.

I'd take it to someone that specializes in gear installs. Ask people at your local race track who does their gears.
The guy who did mine took less then 2 hours and charged me $100. That was about 4 years ago so I'd say $150 is a fair price today.
Definately go with a new posi. Ones from SLP are from 4th gens and are a little stronger then ours.

So let me just gather all this info here........i SHOULD go w/ the 3.73 gears and also get an SLP posi unit? I'm looking to get all this done by MAYBE the end of this month and i need to get as much info as humanly possible. I do appreciate you guys giving me all this info, thanx for that. Should i go to the trans place that quoted me (the guys who i talked to and mentioned in my previous posts)? The guy said 800 bucks for the gears and install...but that wasnt including installing posi....sigh....what to do what to do

The more parts you bring to the shop that does the work, the cheaper it will be. How about this:
new 3.73's 3 series for the Torsen($180?)
SLP torsen take-off(not heavy duty, but works pretty good)($99?)
bearing kit plus axle bearings from NAPA(timken bearings)($120?)
Around 400 bucks in parts
Bring all that to a shop and have it done.
Or:
new 3.73's 2 series for your current gears if thats what you have($190?)
powertrax locker($300?)
bearing kit plus axle bearings from Napa(timken bearings)($120?)
Around 600 bucks in parts
This is what I have, just as an example.
