Oil Filter and Tools

I bought a K&N oil filter for my car and spoke with a mechanic afterwards. He said that it's a waste of money (I have a v6 no mods). What do you guys think? Also, I've recently moved so now I have sort of a driveway to work on my car. Any suggestions on basic tools I can buy to do basic car maintenance? Thanks.

Yes the expensive oil filter was a waste of money. Just stick to the Delco's for $2.50 a peice. For maybe the slight increase in protection it's not worth the ridiculous price increase. The K&N air filter is worth it at least in the fact you can clean and reuse it.

As for tools, get yourself a good socket set with both standard and metric sockets our cars use both quite a bit. Make sure it has 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" drives. Mutli-meter is nice to have for any electrical related problems. Some box wrenchs, pliers, side cutters, needlenose pliers. Just your basic hand tools.

For oil changes, you'll need portable ramps, or a floor jack and jack stands to get the car up high enough to get under it to do the oil change; a pan to catch the oil as it drains out and a container to take it to the recycle center (Checker takes mine); and an oil filter wrench to fit your filter (and hand tools to remove the drain plug). There are several kinds of filter wrenches, from a metal strap, to a cap that fits the flutes on the bottom of the filter, to a web strap on a square bar that you turn with a ratchet. I have all three. Only the web strap is a "univeral" size, the others have to match your oil filter.

instead of ramps you can be real ghetto and use a few 2x4s stacked up to drive the front wheels onto. just make sure there's no nails sticking up!

i agree with the above. you can buy a cheap filter and change it more often if you are concerned and still save money. you can buy a cheap floor jack but if you want to work on anything else or frequently i would get a larger jack. not those tiny little ones they call floor jacks. i got one as sears for like 100.00 and another at a wholesale place for 60.00 they work equally good. as for tools. buy a manual for your car. it does have some good information in it 20 bucks i think and i would reccomend a basic tool set from sears they are good quality and lifetime warranty`you can get a decent set for around 100 bucks i think.
you can get cheap tools for 10 bucks but you get what you pay for. a good set of tools is a life long investment if you can spare the money.
thats just my $.02
