I got a 87 gta, 5.7 engine.

which should be the idler speed?

'cause in parking or neutral, it shows 2000 rpm and when I put the gear in reverse or drive, it went between 900 and 1000 rpm.

Is that OK?

 

Too high... target idle should be about 750rpms. Check for vacuum leaks first, TB linkage issues, IAC, etc...search through the TPI forum for similar issues

 

im havin the same prob with my 85, i put a rebuilt carb on it and the lever wont move back any further to lower the idle, i tried adjusting the screw and its backed off all the way

 

sounds to me like you may be running abit lean, when a motor is leaned out it tends to idle higher (especially when the idle screw does nothing) i don't know much about your motor but i would look into things that may lean out your fuel mixture (o2 sensor after warmup, egr valve, bad ecm or proming etc.) thats just my .02 from the mechanically troubles ive been through im more mechanically mostly with bikes, however all motors are similiar in this aspect i wish i could help more im sure other guys on the board can as they helped alot with me, good luck

I mentioned this 'cause 2 days ago, I went to a shop to change my tires, but when the engine were in idle, hot, turned off, so I started the engine and quick move the car before it went off.

I arrived to the place and notice smoke comming out the engine bay, and when I opened I have fire on the spark cables.

I think they where to close to the exhaust, and that cause the fire. Because I change the cables, and the engine works nice but in high idle speed.

But I havent chenk the screw in the throttle cable base. And I think that would help me a lot.

definately sounds lean runs hot runs clean its probably just a bit lean does this happen like right away or after your car is warmed up?

 

mine was due to teh fast idle cam

 

He has TPI, not a carb. No fast-idle cam.

 

I know but i was involved in this thread coz i was experiencing high idle and i figured it out
