Changing differential fluid. Got some questions.
Changing differential fluid. Got some questions.
Q. #1
I have the 9-bolt Borg-Warner.
My Chiltons says the capacity is 3.5 pints whcich equates to 1 3/4 quarts.
does this capacity sound correct?
Q. #2
It's a 3.27 limited slip...I bought some Red Line Shock Proof Synthetic lube to put in it. I also bought some of the GM Posi additive...is the additive neccessary...I know the B-W is a cone type rather than having clutches.
Should I have just bought regular limited slip gear oil?
Q. #3
Is there a way to suck the old fluid out without un-bolting the cover?
Q. #4
If I have to remove the cover, where do I get a 9-bolt gasket? Would my local GM dealer carry them or AutoZone or NAPA?
Thanks guys.

1) That could be right. Chevy 10-bolts usually take between 2 & 3. I don't know about the BW rear, but on 10-bolts you just fill them up to the fill hole.
2)Can't help you there. I was under the impression that the cones you're talking about actually are clutches, but I'm not sure. I've always heard to use the stuff when you have clutches, it keeps them from grabbing during turns.
3) Yup, but I don't know how you'd do it at home. Service shops have suction machines that stick a tube in the fill hole and suck it out through there.
4) You should be able to get it anywhere, ie. NAPA, Autozone, or definetaly the GM dealer.

just did my Borg Warner and may be able to help a bit. If you really want to suck it out you can use one of the pumps for pumping gear lube in (in reverse). Just don't let the hose fall off in the diff, then you'll have to take the cover off anyway. Not that this happened to me or anything...Taking the cover off is best though as i found a little bit of gunk on the bottom even after I had sucked it out. I still put the additive in cause its pretty cheap and don't think it could hurt. I couldn't find the gasket for the 9-bolt anywhere including NAPA. I'm sure the dealer has it, but it was the weekend and they're closed. I used the permatex gasket maker that comes in either the cheese-wiz type can or the caulk giun style and that was quick and has worked great so far. Min has always just been filled so that it just comes over the check plug and that has always worked fine for me.

Do it once, do it right. Take off the cover and clean all that crap out of there, a suction job will not remove all the debris like draining it will. A man is far better off nursing than sucking. IMO, the wear particles are the main reason to change your gear lubricant in the first place. It also gives you a good chance to check the condition of the gears. Buy a square sheet of generic gasket material from Autozone or Advance and cut your own gasket with a razor knife, use a shell casing from a rifle and a hammer to punch out the bolt holes in it. It's a simple job. Mine hasn't leaked a drop in 8-10K miles.
Squirt some limited slip additive in, fill it up to the plug hole with Mobil 1 75W-90 gear lube (it seems like less than 2 quarts is correct). Use the shock-proof if it isn't heavier weight (it seems like I remember it being higher than recommended by GM). Use the additive for whichever lube you choose.
Hope this helps.

The diff cover gasket for the B/W 9-bolt rear is unavailable. I used to work at Pontiac and I checked for one when I had my GTA. It has been discontinued. Just use black RTV. Thats what I always use. Ive NEVER had a leak.
Also, do use the posi additive, unless you dont like having a posi. Forgetting it will eventually do not nice things to it. The capacity is right though.

Currently installing 3.73's into my 9 bolt (YES, it is a 9 bolt & YES they are 3.73's, not 3.70. I currently have 4.10 gear sets and new series 3 carriers in stock for 9 bolts

I just finished up changing my fluid today. Here's a few tips:
1. Have lots of rags on hand
2. Keep an oil pan underneath when you are pulling the cover off, mine didn't leak out, but yours might
3. When you fill it up, get a bottle of 80W-90 (for camaro's anyways) with a filler spout on it, then get some gas line hose or something, put it on the spout and then you can put the oil in the diff. w/o that big of a mess (I put the bottle between the rear spring and the trunk wall, you should see it when you're under there)
I think that's about all I ran into. I hope you don't mind getting messy. Anyways if you have any more questions email me or post again.

LG4, T-5, no mods yet. I'm just making it roadworthy now so I can drive for a couple of months before winter.
Then I'm restoring it this winter.
