I made friends with a new guy a work today, and he drives a 1984 trans am with a 5.7L V8. The car is in pretty good shape. but the thing he told me was when he runs the VIN on the car the engine comes up as a 5.0L V8, why is this?

P.S. Here is the VIN see for your self, i even looked at the sticker under the hood and it said 5.7 4V.

There is no such thing as a 5.7 from the factory. Of course, who knows what somebody might have put in there. The VIN calls for a LG4 base-model 4-barrel V8.

How do you know it's a 5.7?

Like RB said, from the factory it had an LG4. If it's 100% factory original (to know for sure, you'll have to check the VIN on the engine itself), then your new friend is simply wrong about the 350.

Checking the engine is the only way to know, you can't just look at it and tell. also above guys are right LG4 and 5.7's where not avil until 86 (RARE!!! i think only camaro's as well not sure) 87 full production.

Honda engines ROCK, I have one on my lawn mower but I still have to push it.

 

I checked his emmisons sticker and it said 5.7L 4V, he said he had to buy a new exhaust last week(Dynomax CatBack) He tryed getting the one for the 5.0L engine, and it wouldn't fit, so he had to get a 5.7L intermedent pipe and it fit. The only thing i can think of is the dash is not origional in the car, maybe it was replace and the previous owner forgot to put the right vin plate on it.

Maybe it's a Daytona Pacecar, with NON-RECARO seats.

I don't think the exhaust not being able to fit would have too much to do with the motor. Alot of times I see exhausts advertised for 305's and 350's alike it just depends on the year.If it's an 84' then there is no way it could possibly be a factory 350 in that car. They only started putting them into production in 87'.The only way that car has a 350 if there was an engine swap. If i'm wrong then I just learned something new. But as far as I know there were no 350's in regular production until 87'..and this now concludes my $.02

My 87 GTA says 5.7 on the emissions sticker to but the vin says its a 305. The vin number on the sticker also matches the car's vin#. To make sure I looked at the casting numbers on the block and it is a 305, which I thought anyway because it is a 5 speed.
