350desleeved into 400,Possible??

im trying to find a 400sb and well, they;re pretty damn hard to find round here. could i take a 350, knock the sleeves(i think thats what they call the inner part of the cylinder, the part that actually gets machined) and i guess bore the actual block out and put some bigger sleeves in??thus creating a 400? if so where would i get the bigger sleeves? how much would it possibley cost??

one other quick question, i have an 88maro 2.8with a 5speed, it has a zoom clutch installed by previous owner, would this handle a 400sb's power? what kninda tranny is this anyways!!

There aren't any sleeves in factory blocks. You'd have to bore the 350 block .125" over plus the size of the sleeve, which would be well into the water jackets. You'd end up having no metal left in the block to support the sleeve.

The most CI I've seen out of a 350 block was something like a 392.It used a custom stroker crank which means big money.

A .030 over 350 block with a 3.875" crank is a 396, those cranks aren't all that hard to get. If you could manage to fit a 4" crank into a 350 block you'd have a 402.

I know a guy sellin a 400 SBC 2 bolt cleaned bored +.030 cam bearings for like 450.. if ya want his name let me know.. and no that tranny would not hold up to a 400, the v8 version of that tranny barley holds up to a 305.

Wait a minute you live in tampa and cant find a 400? Water+boats+local boat shops=400's. Or you could just buy the 400 from ede.

As mentioned above, there's not enough metal around the cylinders to install oversized sleeves. At about $100 per hole plus all the machining it would be cheaper to just buy a new block.

My 509 casting 400 block is collecting dust under a bench in my garage. Since I've gone to BBC, I have no need to build a SBC at this time. I'm sure I could sell it quickly if I ever offered it up for sale.

The 454 SBC doesn't use a factory production block. The aftermarket blocks have thicker cylinder walls and allow for larger overbores. The 434 package is becoming very popular but the 454 SBC is taking it to the extream just to show it could be done. Trouble with these large SBC engines is that you need to spend big bucks on heads large enough to flow enough air to feed them. Big SBC heads are usually where small BBC heads start.
