i have a question: does anyones original tach actually work?lol! the last two thirdgens ive owned both didnt work. what should i do?

mine seems to work but when i shut the car off it stays at the rpm it was at when teh car was running

mine works fine. mine also stays at the last rpm, then when i turn it on it goes down.

First make sure the connection to the distributer is good. If you pull the cluster, then check the lead from the cluster to the tach out on the dist.

If you buy a tach online be sure it's for a V-8 and not a V-6. I learned the hard way.

It's a matter of whether you want to spend the money on Autometer or not.

The capacators on the thirdgen tachs are probably dried out by now and are affecting thier accuracy. You can try replacing them but some are hard to read as well.

Mine reads 300 RPM high at 1800 RPM compared to TPRT datalog. It seems to be off by a percentage so it reads even higher as the RPM's increase.

mine worked great. everything was perfect, but I installed an Autometer 5' tach with memory and shift light anyway. I hid it to keep ricers from thinking I joined their bandwagon. It is nestled on top of my console, above the stereo/climate controls, but below the dashpad.
