Air hose from behind the battery to front of carb?

Air hose from behind the battery to front of carb?
Does anyone knows what this ball-like object underneath the batter with a flexible hose to the front of my 84 camaro z28 HO carb? It doesnt seems to flow or suck any air. The end of the hose just sits on the fuel line in front of the carb. I removed it, but what the hell is it for?
