running rich, headers bright orange, + starter probs

why is this. i am running way rich i know i checked the plugs and they are black. it was suggested that A) no crankcase evacuation. i only have a very small vent (about pencil size) in one cover. which i am going to fix tomorrow. B) no exhaust back pressure. i am running right off the header.

i did not drive the car very far maybe about 2 minutes and they were glowing bright. they are coated inside and out too.
is it possible my timing is retarded too much and the gas is burning in the exhaust? i had it where i thought was 16º advanced. it was idleing fairly smooth at that timing too.

also how to shim starter properly?
do you go trial and error or is there a specific amount the teeth on the starter should meet the flexplate. it is a mini starter and i thought it was perfect as i pulled the gear out it fit perfectly into flexplate. but it was horrible sounding. so i loosened up bolts and it didnt sound as bad and car was running. i shut it off and started it again it was perfect. BUT..... it was falling out only one bolt was holding it in. so what should i do? space it way out of move motor? (people with minis know you can swivel starter motor in mounting block)

all i can say otherwise besides havimg a crazy oil leak from the rear of the intake patly due to crankcase pressure and i think partly because my oil pressure is currently upward of 150-170 lbs. i am fixing that as soon as i get a new spring for my pump. this thing (for the 1 mile i drove it total spitting oil everywhere) IS INSANE!! i figured it was going to be slippery but....it is like driving a pickup in the rain, or a sportscar in snow!! my goodyear eagle gsc's need to go. i absolutely cannot wait to run this thing 1/4 mile. or from one light to the next next to a stang or foreign sports junk.

The rotating function in the mini-starter enables it to clear the blcok, or headers, or whatever. It doesn't move the center of the starter shaft toward or away from the crank. Just buy a pack of shims and put about 1/8" of them in, see if it's better or worse, and go from there.

Oil pressure has nothing to do with a leak at the intake. Your gasket probably blew out. There's no pressurized oil there. Lack of crankcase ventilation will aggravate leaks because pressure will build up in there.

If you had 175 psi of OP, you would be blowing oil filters off. If that isn't happening, then the OP isn't that high. I'd recommend you leave it alone unless your pan gasket leaks too or something like that.

Your headers glowing is probably a combination of running rich and timing too far retarded.
