Bracket Question...

Hey guys,

Some of you might remember from last summer, I was having problems with the alignment of my alternator (V-belt setup) and it throwing belts because of it.

Now... I was going through a junkyard today, and found a truck with a 350 in it (late '70s looked like) and it had the same sort of setup as my '83 Z28.

But heres the difference... Unlike my Camaro, this truck's engine didnt appear to have an AIR bracket behind the alternator, nor did the exhaust manifolds have the holes for AIR tubes.

Did these trucks not have a smog pump under the alternator like 3rdgen Camaros did? I took all the alternator brackets from the truck (upper, lower, and the 'tube' that bolts to the bottom of the alternator).

Would these possibly fix my alignment problem? I know its not the pulleys causing alignment issues, because you could see the alternator wasn't lined up with the crank pulley. I think it was because the smog pump bracket that hung off the alternator bolt on the head was removed, and I couldn't get the 'spacing' right with washers.

But anyway... did these trucks come with AIR equipment? Would these brackets work as-is on my Camaro, which has no smog equipment anymore?

Quite possibly they didn't. You could try those brackets, or you could space your stock bracket out with shim stock.

Tried that already, many times. I haven't got it to work yet. I also have a feeling my upper bracket might be a bit warped or bent, so I have to replace that anyway.

i had the alt belt trouble myself, and played the alignment game forever........... my power steering belt was fine the pulleys all looked fine and it seemed lined up i mean we even set it up when the motor was out of the car and measured and straight edges etc..............

switched from the all v belt setup to the one that runs the 5-6 rib serp style belt over the water pump and alt and all troubles are gone my PS is still v belt,

but i only had trouble there when the alt belt came off it would generally roll the PS belt inside out and up on the edge of the pulley

I saw a setup like that a few nights ago at the track... what did you take it off of? The pulleys looked like factory stuff to me.

I think I might have it fixed now, but incase I dont, I'd really like to know...

That was the factory f-body setup in '86 & '87.

I had to shim the AC/PS brackets that mounted to the heads. Apparently the Worlds aren't quite "stock replacement" in that respect.

Wow... I had no idea... I thought they went from V-belts to a full serpentine system. I had no idea they went 'halfway' like that. I might have to keep an eye out for that.

The only things that are different from the full V-belt setup are the alternator, waterpump, and crank pulleys. The flat multi-groove goes to the alternator; the rest, including PS, AC, and A.I.R., are V's. Of course, the AC goes around the water pump as well, but you could convert just by getting the three pulleys.

yeah thats all we did, we scored the 2 sets 1 for my car and 1 for my dads nova for like $20 got em bead blasted and painted good as new..... there are obviously multiple variations out there because we ended up with crank pulleys of different diameters,

figures he got the bigger one and he idles his car at like 800 rpm and never drives it at night,

mine idles like 600 and the lights dim at idle ...........then again with the price of gas mine sits alot now too so oh well
