Trying to save my friend $2700

My buddy had to go and buy an import...

He takes his 92 prelude si up to the honda dealer and they tell him

some part of the crankshaft (the key) that runs or turns the altenator and power steering is bad..

the car still runs...

just the power steering and altenator dont work..

im retarded mechanicaly for the most part...

and Id really hate to see him screwed...he doesnt have a lot of money..

Thanks Guys

if the alternator doesnt work the car wont run because the battery wont be recharged.. if the powersteering is not working then it will be much harder to steer, especially when your not rolling. tell the guy at the dealership to eat **** and die(yea im kidding.. but thats what i would want to do )

I had a friend with the same problem in a Suzuki Swift si. The crankshaft has a key slot in it, so tht the lower timing chain pulley won't turn, and should shear the key in case of a failure. It shears the key sure enough, and that ruins the key slot on the crankshaft. The dealersh!t is giving the estimate based on replacing the crank. This is probably what they'll have to do. As with any car if you tear it down to the point of removing the lower timing gear, the labor is killer. If the bottom of the engine has to come off..enough said.

...and in a Prelude, you might want to consider the fact that the engine has to be nearly removed change the oil, let alone the oil pan and crankshaft. Unfortunately, unless you want to get really creative in your solution, you might be stuck with a new crank. Personally, it's a testament to GM that you can get a complete engine with a warranty for less than that, and have twice the engine when finished. Has your friend considered a replacement engine? Maybe one with a different car attached to it? One that doesn't break crankshaft keys?
