Starter shimming procedure for PG260 starters?
I have just replaced the old heavy
GM starter on my 89 IROC with a newer lightweight
PG260 model. I am trying to establish the proper tooth engagement distance to the flywheel. The instructions for my old starter called for using a 1/8 inch diameter pin (drill bit) to check the distance from the flywheel teeth to the starter pinion shaft. The new starter has a pinion shaft with a much different diameter from the old one, and with no shims in place it looks like I have about 1/4 inch of clearance on this one.
Does anyone know the proper shimming procedure for setting the clearance on the newer PG260 starters? I believe they were used on the fourth gen F-bodies.
