Oil additives

I was wondering if anyone knew if oit additives had any negative effect on an engine? I have an 89 GTA and it has a minor oil leak like most cars that age do. I was thinking about using one of those oil additives that helps seal leaks, but obviously that additive is not motor oil and i was curious if you could cause any damage using it.

Chances are they won't help a leak, the additives are mostly used to try and help seal valve stems up to quit burning oil. Where is your leak coming from?

i really cant tell where the leak is coming from, oil and dirt have blown around down there and it makes it tought to tell. Could be the rear main seal but im really not sure. Is there any good way to clean under there to get a better look?

you might wanna get some brake parts cleaner or any type of degreaser to get down there and spray that area off really good, and maybe even use some type of brush to get all the heavy deposits off, and remember that sometimes oil will be blown to another part of the engine while drivign making you think that oil is leaking from one place when actualy it is leaking somewhere else.

and ya have mail

Vomex,

You may want to use 20W-50 in your car. Thats what I use in mine and I noticed an improvement with my leaky valve stem seals (I replied to your other post). I also noticed better oil pressure. From what I have heard, don't use any oil additives. They can really **** your engine up.

And more Civic's then I can count. Why do they even bother?
