Stupid M/C Solenoid
Here's the deal: Check Engine light comes on one day, so I take a quick look under the hood, and the Mixture Control Solenoid is somehow unhooked. When I reconnect it, the motor dies after 20 or so seconds. I know that the ECM will quit pulsing the M/C solenoid if it gets no signal from the distributer, but all the wires going both from the ECM and to the distributer are connected. Car runs fine with the M/C disconnected, but this morning it was in the low 40's (by far the coldest it's been since this whole episode occurred) and the motor ran pretty ruff until warm - which can be attributed to the M/C not being able to richen the mixture--right?

You've got things all mixed up. With the MCS unplugged it defaults to a ridiculously rich setting, richer than WOT rich.
You're chasing demons, there could be many things going on with your car, but one thing that is for sure is something is wrong if it runs better w/ the MCS disconnected. I'd vote for vacuum leaks (probably a lot of 'em) and perhaps a timing or VAC sensor problem. Until you can rule those out, i'm sticking with that...

- Definitely prototypes, high powered mutants of some kind. Too weird to live, too cool to die
