I'm a traitor I know but I've got two problems and need help!
Hi guys. Listen I have an 88 T/A and now an 88 IROC. (I'm not really a traitor its just in my nature to like the best...i also like the raiders and the 49ers!)
The T/A was ticking/knocking of and on sounds like it is coming from the front of the engine but otherwise ran perfectly. One day the ticking became louder over about 3 miles and the engine died. It did not overheat it just died and would not start again. I had it towed to a nearby shop (as I was too far for AAA to tow to home) and they said seems to the the engine is frozen. I don't know how they came to this conclusion but I think he tried to hand crank it. I said thanks..he said sorry and no charge and I towed it home. just for kicks I tried to start it at home and it turned over about 3 times very slowly but would not start. Does a frozen engine turn over? The shop mentioned frozen or maybe hydrolocked. What does this really mean.. I had been having starter problems for a while....could that be part of the problem?
Part II
My IROC has been running fine...never any problems with it. It is fuel injected. It's problem is that the other day I got to work at 2pm. It is about 100 degrees fairenheit right now(that day anyway) and I worked till 10:30pm. Went to leave and it would not start. It turns over...spark is sparking...no air restrictions...
I left the car at work and went home with a co-worker
next day come in at 2pm again - car starts up fine!!
3pm car starts up fine!!
6 pm car starts up fine!!
get off at 11 today...car won't start again? WHAT IN THE HELL IS THAT!
Any help or suggestions will be GREATLY APPRECIAted...I don't know how long I can keep bumming rides or leave my car at work?
could it have to do with heat or cold?

no, a frozen engine doesnt turn over. It cant be seized then. However, i'm willing to bet something is seriously f'ed inside.

About the first repy, It might be screwed but where do I start in checking for problems with the TA??? Could it be a bad ground or anything like that? I removed the alternator...power steering...and some other stuff recently to replace the front freeze plugs and had to remove the ground wire...wasn't sure where it came from but tried to put it back where I thought it was...although it did not quite reach the battery the same.
Second post...I'll check the ICM and get back to you...
Thanks ...i'm going to keep trying..

This reply has to do with the Iroc. I think what you have is a dead cell in your battery. Next time it won't start, have a friend give you a jump and see if she fires up. If she does, you need a new battery. The T/A has me a little puzzled. Any other info you can provide might help shed some light on the subject.

You could try that, but generally a bad battery would give inconsitent starts. I had a very similiar problem and it turned out to be my ICM. Carry a mulitimeter with you. When the car won't start, test it. If it reads 12 volts the battery is not your problem.
With it still running, take it to Sears or some place and have them test it. They can tell if it is getting flakey. As of now, my money is still on the ICM.
As far as the T/A, It may be time for a rebuild or swap. Anything ticking loudly is not a good sign. Have you drained the oil and inspected it. That may give some direction.
