Highest speeds

I know there are quit a few speed demons on here....When we hit one of those open roads...We cant help but get that ever-so-heavy foot How fast have you taken your car? Ive taken my 170,000 mile 305 TBI to 130 mph. several times....smooth..felt like I was floating on air.So how did you guys do?

P.S.
Speeding is bad....Dont do it unless you are aware of the consequences

As I tend to do a lot of freeway driving.... at truly bizarre hours.... I have had my 88 Formula 350 Auto up to about 125. Unfortunately, if I push the go-pedal any harder, it downshifts into third....... (can you say, "redline"????)

I am aware of the the assorted kits to solve this problem, but, with 145K+ miles on the trans, I would just as soon wait and rebuild it first, and do the mods at the same time.

Yes, speeding can get you in deep sh*t. For speeds beyond the pale, it is usually three in the morning, and a long clear strecth of superslab in front of me. (great fun, this is what these cars were designed for.)

After about 125mph the speed rush goes away and I come to my senses and let off. I always do wonder how fast I could go with those 2.77 gears though....

125 Miles per hour for me. That is usually when I think I see a white blur that is a cop and slow down.

I'm a bit of a weenie, so the best I've ever seen is 115. At that point I began to have visions of what my car would look like if I hit a deer at that speed. Or what my a** would look like sitting in a jail cell. It's a good thing, too, because not but a minute after I dropped back down to the speed limit, I see this navy blue blur come flying up behind me. Sheriff!!! He rode my a** for about a mile, then finally dropped back. I guess he was going the other direction and saw me fly by but didn't get me clocked, so there was nothing he could do about it. But my I have a few friends with more ***** than me that have seen 140 in their thirdgens. They both said things started to get kinda scary at that speed, that they expected parts to start falling off the car.

I had to estimate based off of redline speed and tire size because the 84 on has a 85 mph speedo. Anyway it was 115 mph and that was with my old setup and bad brakes and a shot front end.
By the way it is not a good thing when the car feels like it is floating on air!! That means that it really is. Our cars generate front lift at speed. The spoilers and ground effects really do not do anything except make them look cool. The cars half to get lowered about 2 inches and then they become much safer.

best in my 86 camaro was 138. it was still climbing, but unfortunatly i was coming up on some traffic (there was none at all when i first hit it). best in my 94 so far is somewhere between 145 and 150. it also was still climbing, but i decided i was coming up on some a ways a way and the guy i was racing was way behind so i let up. both cars using comp ta zr's and were very smooth. the 86 though felt like the side window's were going to get sucked off it.

I had mine at 142 mph with my 2.73 rear. Felt like the tires were leaving the road, so I let off.

Ok, I must be the dumbest of all. My previous TA, 305 carb'd, all stock, I did 150mph. Although my gauge didn't go that high, I caculated it from my rear gearing, tire size, and rpm's. I was pushing 4000 rpm, felt like it may of had a little more, but damn, 150 is enough of a rush as it is.

P.S. Handled like a dream too!

125 MPH here, no problem going faster, but I was running out of road, so the brain sent a message to the foot to hit the brakes.

Well, since I have the speed limiter, 115 is about the highest I go. heh. Oh, and if it feels like you're floating on air, it's probably because you're just about doing so. There's very little weight on the back tires in our cars and because of such the rear end floats a bit, expecially at high speeds. (Obviously I don't literally mean the wheels floating off the ground...) That little spoiler/wing doesn't help much either.

I bought my 88 IROC (305, TPI, 5-speed) brand new. Once I had broken it in, I went out in the boonies and found a long straight road with no traffic. I chickened-out at 135, and it was still accelerating.

I usually don't speed. The fastest i've had my car, is to 95mph. I would like to find a track or something to test top speed. Although, after 70mph or so, my car vibrates like mad, which stops me from going much higher.

no cops watching this, are there?

about 125-130 for me in my old 86 T/A. i started feeling like I was going to sneeze...and i could only imagine losing the car and smashing into a tree at that speed. so i chickened out at that "modest speed".

Had my 92 z up to 110 on I-80 somewhere out in the middle of pennsylvania, but with the ragtop the wind rushing over the top starts sucking at the plastic back window making a horrible noise. it was still accelerating, though, so I wonder how fast it really goes? i've heard that the ragtops have a lower speed limiter, but i've never encountered it.

125 with the 'ol 2.8. Ran out of road, but it didn't have much more.
Funny, I'm scared sh*tless to take my new combo that high. Seems like the slower the car, the more comfortable i was at high speeds.
I did get the 356 to 120-easy, chickened out.

-350, .040 over, vette alum. L98s, stock tpi.

Best with 2.8-17.4@77mph
Best with 305-15.0@93mph
Best with 356-13.7@101mph
on a 2.050 60 ft.

My speedo goes to 145...and the needle will go as far passed that as it will go and I'm still accelerating. So I'm guessing at LEAST 150...bare minimum.
I've been there 3 or 4 times...this year...LOL!
Still has the stock 3.27 rear so I know the speedo is as close to correct as the factory made it.

I see 120-130mph quite often.
Traffic or no traffic...don't matter much to me!

What can I say, I have issues

1987 IROC 355 TPI
Lotsa go-fast-goodies!

And at 150mph...it's as solid and smooth as it is at 60mph! The only thing that shakes is the dash board...never quite understood that but it's a natural thing with 3rd gens from what I gather.

Anyone in the newjersey philly area knows front street ive been out there a bunch of times in my freinds sirrocco doing 135 easy and ive done 130 in my old thunderbrd a many of times on I-295 in daylight or whenever. and who ever said they slow down when they think they see a cop are trully the craziest people here. Because the ammount of *** whoopin youd recieve for doing that is far out weighs just runing. Ive out ran 2 cops todate and if im ever doing insane speeds again I will likely out run more... ( I stopped speeding like crazy recently damn that probationary driver program)

For any of thouse who doubt my logic about out runing cops think about it... your doing say 115 and see a cop on the side of the road... your moving too fast for his camera to get your plate... if you simply go up to like 120 125 he has to come from a dead stop to 125 and hed have to get to like 150 to make anykinda ground on catching you... if the next exit is a mile away your 30 seconds from freedom. and the first 20 hes just getting up to speed...

What about the cop thats waiting for you where your turning at???Thats the thing about cops...they have friends, they dont work alone....Cause if they did....who would stop? And if you get caught...if you think new camaro insurance is high.......wait till you get a ticket for failing to yield to a blue light(cop) it ont matter if you drive a 4cyl toyota pickup....your speedin days will be over...lol..im not giving a lecture..just stating the obvious.speed is very addicting Love it!

When I first got my car I took it to 120 or so hit the limiter. Really did not look at the speedo.

I'm not entirely sure since my speedo only goes to 85, but after some calculating it came out to 130-140 mph(depending on tire radius) racing my friends VW on the street in my old '87 with this engine and 2.73 gears. I was basically ringing it out at 5 grand in 3rd if anyone else wants to take a stab at it.

The only reason I was going that fast is because he turns onto the highway in front of me and guns it spinning that little 4 bangers wheels best he could. I had to wait for a car to pass and then I had to run him down. He said he almost $hit himself when he was going 100 and I passed him like he was standing still!

I've went 150 with 2 other people in the car, with 3.73 gears, missing one cylinder(its dead, ring is gone), and was only at 4.5k rpms in 5th gear, had more but it was getting just a wee bit scary when you see cars fly by you.

Because the ammount of *** whoopin youd recieve for doing that is far out weighs just runing. Ive out ran 2 cops todate and if im ever doing insane speeds again I will likely out run more... ( I stopped speeding like crazy recently damn that probationary driver program)

For any of thouse who doubt my logic about out runing cops think about it... your doing say 115 and see a cop on the side of the road... your moving too fast for his camera to get your plate... if you simply go up to like 120 125 he has to come from a dead stop to 125 and hed have to get to like 150 to make anykinda ground on catching you... if the next exit is a mile away your 30 seconds from freedom. and the first 20 hes just getting up to speed...

aww god I miss that street ...used to have some of the greatest street racing ever ...to bad philly now has a "street racing unit"

hey madmax....non thirdgen? my 98 cbr900rr was reading somewhere around 180 on the speedo..couldnt tell quite clear cuz the damn wind was shakin my head all over the place, i had no plans on stopping if a saw a cop, that is damn near 3 miles a minute by the time a dufis cop put his car in drive i would have been about a half mile away. as for 3rd gen my little 305 tpi would not brake 115 without going 4th-3rd-4th-3rd-4th-3rd...pissed me off. but i hope to send my car into moronic speed when i get it going again. as for another non third gen (not even a chevy) i take my 99 ford powerstroke pickup to about 95 just about daily (thats holding my foot to the floor.
boy do i like speed...so much infact i damn well may be walking soon because of it....i will find out sept 17 at spfld superior district court

Dude, you are out of your mind.........

I got the car up to 140 on a little two lane road. Trees rushing by at 140 made me get off the throttle. Won't do that again on that road.

Honestly, the fastest I ever went was 150 and change in my '86. Helps out alot when you mod the valve body not to downshift as soon! Course my shift points sucked 'cuz I had to change the TV cable to go that fast. The suspension worked great! I saw a blur on the other side of the road behind me and slowed after going over a little hill on I-10 using the E-brake and trans. Turned out to be a FL trooper...caught up with me like a minute and a half later!

One night at work during lunch I got up to 115 mph, I was coming up on the turn I had to take plus the fact something always breaks on my car anyways and I didn't want anything to go wrong at that kind of speed. When I got out all I could smell was my brakes.

If you disable the VSS, you can disable the speed limiter. I think there's a technical article on how to put a switch in to do that.. Of course, you also don't have a speedo anymore (I think), and I'm pretty sure your torque converter won't lock up (but you can install a manual switch for that too), but if you're breaking 115, you couldn't be TOO concerned with how fast you're going.

I'm sure most of you out there are aware of this, but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't go that fast without z-rated tires!

If I see a thirdgen approaching me at 150 and a tire blows out and you jump the median and hit me I'm going to be VERY p!ssed off!

About 138 before the drag starts to take over and really affect the car. I suppose you could accelerate a bit more given adequate distance. Then again, this was with a 305 TA with a 2.77 Borg rear, at full fighting weight and with an extra large air dam. An aerodymanically cleaner Formula would likely do much better, but could be a little more "interesting" to control at that air speed.

non-thirdgen(76 gmc sierra classic 454 swb pickup)= 162

thirdgen( 87 Formula )= 150 or so. went around a turn at 100 and could feel the back end sliding around. that is some scary stuff at that speed.

85mph speedos SUCK!!!!
I dont know how much im getting out of my 305tpi w/ 3.27 gears. It is well burried even at the track. I cant tell after about 3500rpm in 3rd gear....take that to 5000, and then it shifts. Wish I knew how fast I was going. And I HAVE been in an 89rs when It blew out a rear (thank *** ) tire going about 125. The tire took off most of the ground effects and paint on that side, but i guess im just happy to be alive.
be careful!!!
