LT1 Intake on a Gen1 SBC--Finished!

I finished the mod of all mods. I successfully swapped a TPI for a LT1 intake and it is fully road tested today. It's back in service as my daily driver.
Don't ask, I'm already ahead of you, the tech article is in works, I took lots of pictures.
I will have track times Monday, before and after. Sunday is test day at Silver Dollar Racetrack, GA(Big Fall Shootout-Fbodys only).
Here's the latest pic all done.

So.... How does it work? Is it a good improvement, just from the seat of the pants dyno? This is looking so good!!!

Fast is fast, so I can't tell you if it'll make a differance at the track yet(I'm going Sunday). SOTP feeling, I did loose low end torque, it's not as easy to burn the tires as it used to be silly burning them. The top end is alive, I can't spend time in that area on public roads.

Good job ! Looks great. Yea thats the one thing that I dident like when I drove an LT1, no bottem end grunt but then thats good, keeps a person more consistent off the line. Oh and I dident like that skip shift crap either but thats probably not an issue with your ride.

Again Good job! I look forward to reading your tech artical.

That is awsome... much better than the $1200 for the miniram. Keep us updated!!

Quick question: What is the stock bolt pattern on the LT-1, would it bolt up to vortec heads? Are there any aftermarket Lt-1 heads that would work on the L98 so that the blot pattern wouldnt be an issue?

I have never seen vortec heads, I would buy just the lower intake gasket set for those heads and lay them againest a LT1 intake.

Any aftermarket heads for a LT1 will have the same bolt pattern as stock, no matter what. GM never intended for use to do such mods, that's why the bolt pattern is differant.

Car: 85 Z28
Engine: 305 TPI (dead) -> building 355
Transmission: 27 spline 700R4 (another one died) -> T5 goin in next
Do you think that it would be worth the effort to put that on a 305?

Thanks,
Jesse

They don't recommend the Miniram for a 305 so I would think the same rules apply. The general rules are, displacement 350+, good flowing heads, cam with the right rpm range, low ratio rear axle and a higher then stock stall converter(automatic).

Was it hard to do? There is a cab sitting in the junkyard right now with an LT1 still in it all together. Should I grab it?

I WOULD RATHER PUSH A CAMARO THAN DRIVE AN IMPORT

1983Z28 350w/ edelbrock performer RPM power package , dynomax shorty headers, 700R-4 with shift kit, 750cfm carb, edelbrock 3" exhaust system, 16" IROC rims and ASCD SS hood.

future mods:
completely done over suspension, black paint with flames,
T-56 almost ready to go in, TPI swap coming up

Wifes new car:

95Z28, AT, leather, T-tops bone stock for now.

future mods:
header to tailpipe replacement and a cold air intake. Then I am just going to leave it alone

There are several problems with the STOCK LT1
intake but the ports and coolant passages are not one of them. What I did
before I started was get a cheap $6 intake gasket from DAP and just layed it
on the intake (already off the car), everything was perfect except for some
of the mounting holes, the 4 corner ones were good. No problem, I took the
gasket as a templet and drilled the new holes in the intake, no more
problem.

Problem #2, in case you havn't noticed there's no rear distributer on a LT1.
I had to drill the hole for it, warning-this hole must be in perfect
location. I used a old TPI base and made an aluminum templet utilizing the
rear two mounting holes to locate the dist hole. Distributer must be shimmed
about 1/4" higher due to the shortness of the LT1 intake. Also must use the
small HEI distributer with remote coil found on 1987-later.

Problem #3, No front coolant passages to return to the radiator. Well, I
just drilled and tapped two 3/4" heater nipples vertically where the coolant
would normally exit the head. I will run 3/4" heater hose to a remote
thermastst housing I found on-line. it will be mounted on the fenderwell. It
will use the same outlet neck and return to the radiator as it should.

Problem #4, must have custom fuel lines made to attach to the fuel rail of
the LT1. About $40 if you supply the ends. Available from Pep Boys

Problem #5, the was a temp sensor in the front of the TPI intake base, it's for the computer temp info. I will have to mod the remote thermostat housing for an additional hole.
