Umm, problems with the 'ol 5speed!
Umm, problems with the 'ol 5speed!
Guys,
I was out driving last weekend, coming off interstate I felt this LOUD vibration from the tranny, took it out of gear, went away, put it back in gear, did it a few more times and finally I couldn't get it into gear at all. I luckily forced it into 4th and got it to a friends house, parked it, speed up to last night , got the tranny out and found the throwout bearing had come off the fork!
hmm, noticed that the bellhousing was LOOSE..
The clutch teeth look fine along with everything else in the clutch, slave cylinder looks fine also.
Could this have done anything to the tranny itself? Internally?
Thanks,
Brendan

Leirch,
Unless the incident placed some unusual lateral loads on the input shaft of the trans, there is probably no damage caused by the loss of the throwout bearing. You might want to check the bolt holes and dowel pin recesses of the bell housing for excessive wear to make sure the loose mounting didn't hammer the bell housing into junk.

I've had that happen before to me too.... it didn't damage anything except the throwout bearing, which fell all to pieces when I pulled the BH out. So I'd be inclined to agree with Vader; put in a new release bearing and leave it at that, if the clutch isn't too old. If the clutch has more than 30 or 40k miles on it though, now would be a good time to go ahead and renew it while you've already got it apart.

Thanks guys. I was planning on waiting until this winter to pull the missing/tired shortblock but I think I'm going to start earlier so that I can repaint the engine bay and do some cleanup on the car. Just wanted to make sure it wasn't anything serious. I'll check everything thats been suggested and go from there.
Thanks again,
Brendan

UPDATE:
Welp, just got the motor out and upon removal of the bellhousing and clutch I found that one of the spring was completely out, pilot bearing was out and out misc metal parts were laying around. Looks like a new clutch is in order now..
