Odd noise while car is OFF!!!

Every once in a while i notice that my car will out of the blue make a weird whirring noise, even after it has been off for a long period of time. It only lasts for a couple seconds and I never know when it is going to make the noise so i cant listen for it, but it sounds like it is coming from the rear of the car. Could it be the fuel pump? Any ideas?

My 1991 Formula does the same thing, if I run my car for a short period of time in the morning my fuel pump stays on for about 10 seconds after I turn my car off.

If it is a kind of honking noise, almost like somebody blowing their nose; and it only happens when the car has been driven for a good while and then parked; and does it the most when the tank is low of gas; and you get little blasts of it that only last a second or 2, once every minute or 2; then it's probably the little pressure relief valve for the gas tank. It's in front of the left end of the rear end, in the axle tunnel, on the end of one of the gas tank lines.

if it's at the rear of the car it's definitely the fuel pump, especially if it only ran for a few seconds. Aftermarket pump took care of it, pain in the *** to install but well worth it

yeah, it sounds like someone is blowing their nose. If its the pressure release valve does this mean that it is bad, do i need a new one?
