Turbocharging the Duke

I have an 82 Firebird with the 2.5 liter 4 cylinder with EFI/TBI. Does anyone know if it possible to install a turbo kit on this particular engine? Has it ever been attempted? What would it take? I do know that so far I've come up empty on searches of this subject. Thanks for any help you can give.

You're coming up empty for a reason. I've never heard of anyone doing it. Certainly there's no ready-made kit to do it. And if it's the carbureted version of the engine (82? I thought it was carbed.) I'd do two things in the following order:

1. Run far away.

2. Run fast.

The basic operating PRINCIPLES would be similar to putting a turbo on a TBI 305 engine (which other board members have done), but the hardware will almost certainly be full-custom.

C'mon! Drop a Grand National turbo V6 in that puppy if you want to have anything close to a "bolt-in" turbocharged engine under the hood of your 'Bird.

If your goal is just to see what you can get out of it and not to have the baddest car on the street I'd say go for it. There are obviously better platforms to start, but I thnk it'd be a cool project.

Take a lot at the power adder forum. You can learn a lot over there. And most of the guys can help with any questions. You'll be needing an exhaust manifold, turbo, oil lines, some way to control boost (wastegate and blow off valve), some way to control fuel under boost. If it's any sort of EFI you'll need a specific chip burned to compensate.

Pontiac made some SD parts for the iron duke back in the day, might have to really do some looking around. They did build up an '83 SD 4 banger and got something like 272hp out of it with a top speed of 150 and 1/4 mile time in the low 13's but somehow I don't think that's a cost-effective go-fast solution for today, imo.

I am not to familiar with the iron duke. Is it 2.5L like it the S-10. If so there are several performance parts for it. I would not reccomend going with this motor though. You could build a nice small block for less. But if you are deadset on running it just search for the s-10 parts and make the needed mods to make it work. If it is carbed you can turbo it easily. I am almost positive I have seen a turbo kit for th 2.5L s-10. Good luck and if you need anymore help feel free to PM me.
