Quick question.. spherical canister?

My friend has a 3rd Gen V8 Camaro 82 with a spherical case or canister on the driver's side in front of the tire.. I've never seen one before; does anyone know what it is?

It's a vacuum reservoir to keep accessories such as cruise control and heater routing operating during low vacuum conditions, such as going up hills.

By his wording, it sounds as if he is describing the charcoal canister. For the original poster, if it looks like a coffee can, it is the charcoal canister, designed to catch fuel vapors and allow them to be recycled through the intake for combustion. If it looks like a big black softball on steroids, then it is a vacuum container as five7 described.

On a side note, isn't the phrase "spherical canister" kind of contradictory?

YEP! Spherical meant a "ball shaped object" to me.

I'll shut up now and crawl back into my hole.....
