~!GMTech!~ and other dealer guys...
What is the shop time for a thirdgen f-body fuel pump... no diagnostic time, simply in and out stuff... and how much is labor for your shop?
I just got charged 438 for a fuel pump for my car, he said it was half labor half parts... funny since I can get a fuel pump for 38 bucks... and his labor cost is only 58 an hour...

You gotta drop the gas tank for fuel injection, and dropping a thirdgen gas tank is not fun, considering the muffler is under it...not to mention that you cant even get your hands up in there.

I thought the gas tank was above the rearend? I have heard of disconnecting enough of the rearend to swing it out of the way, this requires a lift. The muffler is under the truck well???

A friend of mine that works at a GM dealership says it's about a four hour job.
Don't know what the book says, but he says he'll look it up and tell me tonight.I'll update tomorrow based on what he says.
It's a pain, so most people would still rather pay to have it done, even though it's expensive.I think last time I paid about $60 for the gm pump and about $100 for labor, but he owed me a favor.

It's not hard at all, just takes a lot of time, especially if the tank has gas.
We did my brothers 96 V6 Camaro one day, took us about 4-6 hours in our driveway.
Just jack the car up as high as possible, put jack stands under the body, put a jack under the hogs head, start unbolting the shocks, panhard bar and the other bar above that one, oh, don't forget to take the back wheels off, you'll need clearance when you push the rear axle down.
Unbolt the muffler mounts, if muffler is clamped on, unclamp it and take it off, otherwise you just have to push it out of your way.
Remove the heat shield that is above the muffler, carefully undo the hoses going to the fuel tank, they are right there at the wall of the back seat.
Now lower the rear axle as low as you can go, just watch out for your brake lines, you don't want to snap one.
Now remove the bolts that hold the straps that are holding the tank.
Now carefully wiggle the tank out, take extra care not to crack the filler neck.
After you get it out replace the pump and do everything in reverse order.
Piece of cake.

That's an awful lot to pay. When i had my fuel pump replaced I supplied the fuel pump 50 dollars and they charged me 238 for the labor, they didn't owe me any favors or anything like that. Now i work at the gas station part of a gas station/ service center. Next time i work i will ask my mechanic what it would cost. I'd say you got bent over on this one.

I know how to do it, and quite frankly I don't really care... my mech is doing it, and for the amount of money he quoted me, he can suck up more labor and parts money if he screws up, because I'm not paying a dime more than 418 for this thing... (150 for part (don't ask me how he comes to this, considering dealer is only 118...) and 238 for labor and like 11 bucks for a strainer.)
I only need what shop time is for this to make sure I don't get d*cked on labor... but thats already been answered... so thanks everyone...
(sorry I'm so snappy, this has been -the- most stressful week)
