Car weight:why so high????

Car weight:why so high????
I usually see curb weights listed at around 3200-3300, but have read on here that some cars are up to 3700-3800 w/o driver. What gives? Where did the 500 lbs. come from? Even if driver were included, that's still ~300 lbs over normal!
