Help - 383 oil pan clearence
Need help quick. My freakin' crank hits my oil pan ('86 and up style). I have been hammering on it all night and it still hits. Anyone know how and where to clear it? Any pictures? I'm really gettin' discouraged here. Thanks

Bunker, where is it hitting? On the rail? Sometimes you have to notch it, I wouldn't hammer on it, you may throw the rail off a bit.

Just take a die grinder and grind off the area its hitting. Don't hammer it or you will distort it. When you put a 400 crank in a 350 block a little grinding is neccesary!
Good luck.

I was clearing it by the counter weight at the very rear. I have that all cleared and now I still hear metal to metal somewhere else and I have no clue where else it could be hitting. I'm about ready to give up on this 383. Major PIA.

Thanks for the replies guys. Just for the archives, it turned out the crank was just barely touching the metal sandwiched in the middle of the pan gasket (since it's the '86 and up style). Took like two minutes with a file and it's all clear.

for the previous comment. most don't even bother with the 400 crank anymore. more cost than it's worth. better off buying a brand new unit with the longer stroke made for the 350 mains.
