Blind Guy Needs Help With Starter Removal

Hello all, I'm legally blind, I am very near sighted... I was wondering if someone had a diagram or could explain to me how the starter is bolted to the engine. I may have to replace it. My problem with my vision is that I have to get close to see things... If I have a diagram or an explanation, it would really help out.

I know it's on the passenger side, my friend helped when I replaced the battery cables...

91 Formula TPI 5 Speed..

Any tips on how it's best removed / replaced, etc... would be great.

Thanks,
Rafael

Get an f-body auto repair manul from autozone or pretty much any parts store, either chiltons or haynes will do. It should have instructions to where it is and how to remove. You can open it in the store and read it, but they are only like 15 bucks so its a great thing to have handy. I like to read mine at work even if I already know how to do something.

How do you drive if your sight is so bad? Thats cool that you still like automobiles so much

As stated above, a repair manual will tell you how to do it and is a great thing to have, but since you asked for an explanation, here it is.

(Important) Step 1 - Disconnect Negative batt cable

Then...
From under the car on the passenger side, above your oil pan and below your manifolds is a large cylinder with a smaller cylinder above it, that's your starter. The cylinder on top is the solenoid and has two or three studs sticking out of it with 3 wires held on with nuts. Remove these. At the end of the bottom part closest to your firewall is a square bolt flange with two bolts going up into your block. While holding the starter(It's heavy and you don't want it falling on you), unbolt them. Pull forward(out of flywheel teeth) and then down. Just a warning: it's going to be tight if you have the stock manifolds on there. You won't be able to see the nuts holding the wires on at all since they will be obstructed by the manifolds and the starter itself.

Just like in the shop manual:
Installation is the reverse of removal.

Good luck and enjoy.

-Matt

In addtion to what matt posted the two bolts that hold it to your engine are 9/16". The little bolt that holds the support bracket in place is rouhgly 8mm or so.

Out of curiosity, do you drive the car, or just maintain it?

Thanks for everyone's advice... I have both auto manuals, but hav msplaced them in my recent move... & don't recall any photos...

I do not see well enough to obtain a license... I'm building a Kitt replica... Ironic, huh? I know some people are like, "why tear up a nice car", but I have made nice improvemnets to it, new LCA & Panhard bar, Bilstein shocks and struts, STB, Wonder Bar, aluminum driveshaft, etc... In the closet waiting to go, jet hot coated Hooker 2055's, 3 inch magnaflow cat & super 40 muffler, MSD Digital ignition, wires, cap & rotor & coil, spohn sub frame connectors, etc.... Oh & Pro 5.0 shifter installed...

This car's never had it so nice

I have driven it around my neighborhood a few times, after upgrading a part, but usually my licensed friends drive it. I grew up enjoying cars with my dad, we use to have a 67 or so, 3 speed vette once... I still enjoy cars, even though I do not drive....

Driving is somethign many people take for granted... it affects so many aspects of one's life...

The feeling I get when I'm in that car... I guess that's why I do it.

Laser eye surgery can only correct for what glasses could fix.

Good luck with you car, and your eyes! I work in a cataract and Lasik center as the QA/QI/Surgical Planner/Technician depending on the day. See lots of miracles.

Once again, good luck with the car!!!!!!

Alright, I found my books...
My starter turns fine & sometimes just clicks...

the solenoid on top has 2 big screws on the end... the top one goes to the batter cable... if I run a cable from the battery to the lower screw (under the one that the battery is normally hooked to) I will see if it cranks or clicks...

Next question... where would these shims be if I have some, by the head of the bolts or other end..??

As far as my sight goes, that is true about the laser surguery... I would rather wear a contact lens than have my eyes messed with...

if it just clicks, the battery may be low enough to not allow it to turn over. just a thought.

Sounds like the starter may be bound up and in need of some shimming.
