starter prob....pre 70's 350 and T5 tranny
arite this is really pissing me off..we swapped my '82 Z28 305 to a 1969 Chevelle 350 i have a T5 tranny with the 18 degree bell housing. now the only starter we can fit into the bellhousing is the 305 starter which we had to drill the block to fit the bolt patern. now this worked fine til i fried that starter which we expected cuz it was so old. so we buy a new starter and put in 2 shims and it worked fine...for a week. til i fried that one today so we figure that the 305 starter just dont have the power to turn the 350. i've talked to sme guys here on the boards who siad their 305 starters are fine with 350's but maybe i have more compresion i dont know. does anyone have any ideas before i go out and buy the $330 CSI custom starter.thanks.

Black Z,
Really, the starters should be have the same armature winding and stators. There are high-torque versions, but your problem doesn't sound typical of a starter that is failing from stalling. Usually, those tend to slow down when the engine is already warmed, and fail to crank when hot.
Instead of a custom starter, you might want to check out a reduction gear starter from a 1992-later LT1. They bolt up to SBCs with a 12-3/4" flywheel and have more than adequate torque, plus a lower current requirement. GMPP offers a "hybrid" starter that is designed for either bolt pattern/flywheel size, and can be field modified so that the solenoid is at almost any position to clear the case, headers, etc.

thanks a lot, about how much do these starters run? I was also told that im burning up starters because my timing is off but we just recalibrated the timing and the 2nd starter still fried. I was told that the timing is too far advanced and I'm prematurly firing thus making the starter kick back..im not sure if thats the case or not but at this point i think im about to head to the swap meet and but myself a cheap muncie 4 speed screw this T5 B.S.

Just take the nose piece off the cheap 305 starter and put in on your 350 starter. I'm doing the same thing. I have a 1977 truck motor in mine and I just put a T5 in it. I put the stock 305 starter in it. If it fries then I'll just swap the nose piece to my high torque starter and be done with it.
