Pushrod Length

The guy that was supposed to check wut length pushrods I need still hasnt gotten around to it. So, I put 2 stock LT1 pushrods in, put #1 at TDC, opened the intake valve all the way, set the exhaust lash to 1/4 past zero, then opened the exhaust valve all the way and set the intake valve. The roller tips went just a tad past the center of the valve when fully open. The rockers seem to be pretty level with the angle of the head. Dose that mean that thats probably the length I need?

Why don't you just buy your own pushrod length checker (I don't know if you can rent them from Kragen) and be sure?

You can make a "solid" lifter out of an old roller one. Take the guts out, and fill them with a couple of washers. I believe when I did it I made it so the pushrod cup in the lifter sat down .030" lower to simulate the valve adjustment. Paint the top of the valve stem with a magic marker or that blue machinist dye, put in your modded lifter, and tighten the rocker arm nut. There will be no preload, just until zero lash. Spin the motor around a couple of times, and remove the rocker arm. If pushrod length is correct, the wear mark will be equal above and below the centerline of the valve tip (roughly the wear mark is across center third of the valve tip). If it is off, you will need an adjustable pushrod tool to find the right length.

I dont like buying something I might not necessarily need. I followed the instructions Ive gotten from people and from reading, and the Lt1 pushrods I used seem to fit correctly. Since it went just a bit to the exhaust side, pushrods the next size down should theoretically fit perfect, right? Therefore no need to buy a checker. Am I right?

If you don't use a solid lifter (or a homemade one) to check it, the mark will be off b/c the lifter collapses under the valve spring pressure. If you didn't mill the heads much or deck the block, the factory hydraulic roller pushrod length should be fine. You can't assume the next smallest size will be perfect. You would have to use an adjustable pushrod to see the patterns at different lengths. Also remember you would be checking the lengths that are readily available (.025" or .050" increments over stock).

The heads have not been machined at all. Theyre stock Trick Flow 23 degree KD series. Says special length pushrods required for them.

I would call trick flow (330-630-1555). They should be able to tell you if a special length pushrod is required. If you have to measure them, break down and spend the $15 for an adjustable pushrod and do it. It costs a lot less than buying a second set of pushrods if you "guess" wrong.
