Cold Weather Problems?

I own an 84 TA 4bbl. While driving in the recent cold weather of western PA, I noticed that my "check engine" light came on whenever I was crusing at highway speeds (60-75mph). During this time, the temp gague went down a bit. It went out as soon as I started working the engine harder by pulling hills, and the engine warmed up some. My guess is that the fuel isn't being vaporized enough due to the cold weather (ice cold air running through the carb) condencing it, making the emissions electronics think something is wrong. It done this once before, when I was running without a thermoustat (the old one went bad), and the weather was starting to get cold. It hadn't done this since I put the new thermoustat in prior to the cold weather. The car did not act up at all, no power loss or hesitation. Thanks for any replies.

why dont you scan the codes to see what the problem was. sounds like an egr code since there was no noticable performance loss and the light went off a little while later.

Yup, sounds like the EGR to me, and it would account for the tempratue decrease since the valve is responsible for circulating exhaust gas BACK into the engine...

Pull the code and see if you get a (32)

The light probably went off only because you pushed the engine harder, the EGR will disengage at WOT and higher throttle....

My 86 did that until I replaced a vacuum hose that was completely split. That car was 4bbl as well.

Where can I get a code reader, and how much do they cost? That, and why would it only do it in COLD weather, and only at highway speeds? It never done it when I was driving in the city... even for long periods of time. Thanks for any replies.
