Horrible Noise

i'm getting this horrible rattling noise coming from the area of my harmonic balancer, this is a 305 tbi in an 88 camaro, i took off all the belts and ran it for a second and it still made the rattling noise, can this happen if they start to go bad???

Yes they can do that. When the blob of spooge that connects the outer ring to the hub breaks, the ring can just spin around, and it will rub against the timing cover and the pulley.
