1985 Z car or lawn mower?

I finally got the car to the point where it'll start and move. but hte thing sound like a lawnmower, you have to rev the thing for 5 mins or so before it'll idle, no air pump or ac. it wants to die evertime you put it in gear. the last owner relly messed things up. any ideas???

Start from scratch:

Does the SES light come on?

Check all plugs, wires, vacuum hoses, distributor cap, rotor, choke, anything connected to vacuum hoses, etc. He may have messed up the idle circuits or other carb internals, left control connectors disconnected, etc.

If all this fails, consider putting a blade and rear bag on it...

actually come to think of it the SES light is the only thing that lights up inside, there are a few loose connectors, and there doesn't seem to be a wire going to the choke

If you don't know how old the ignition parts are, I would put in new plugs wires cap and rotor to start with. Then check the spark...if you get a nice snap or it makes you jump when you grab it start on the fuel side. Make sure the choke is functional. See if fuel is dumping into the engine when its running or not(stuck float is what I'm thinking here) Oh, and let us know what each plug looks like--sometimes they tell a story. Also, what does the exhaust look like? What does the oil smell like? Is the oil full, overfull, not on the stick? Do you have good gas in the car?(not old)

Custom 3 inch single into 2 2.5 pipes. 1 1/2 drop springs, 1 5/16 solid front sway bar, 1 inch rear bar, custom subframe connectors, custom LCA relocation brackets. Kobel ground FX, currant red metallic paint. Lots of other stuff...

If you can even pull a code it seems to be in the "limp home" mode.

If the car has been sitting a while pull the cap and check for excessive corrosion on the contact surfaces. There could be arcing and some other thisngs going on.

Does it idle okay after it's warmed up? If so, I would say somethin with the choke.
