Engine Pulley Setup

My engine pulleys are making a few odd noises. I think I have it narrowed down to: A. Alternater B. A.I.R./ smog pump C. Crank pulley, maybe. The A/C compressor front end is new, so I think it is some if not all of the others.

What is a good setup to get to do away with the annoying parking lot noises?

What are "a few odd noises"?

I would just replace with stock if they need it.

Mostly a rattling, raspy sound. Sounds like metal on metal. I went by Auto Zone, he said it sounded like either the smog pump, the water pump (which is pretty new), but was more likely the timing chain, because it goes away at anything much above an idle. It makes sense to me.... Does it to you?

My AIR pump made similar noises when it went out, easily diagnosed with a mechanics stethoscope ($10 or so at Sears). When I probed the AIR pump it was very obvious it was the source of the noise.

My water pump was making that kind of noise. I think it may have been cavitating or was just worn out.

If you live where there are no sniffer tests you could just ditch the smog pump and reroute a longer belt.

I was planning to ditch the smog and get headers. But the water pump is what gets me, it is less than a year and a half old.

I just went through the same thing after I replaced the 305 in my car. had me scratching my head all day. First I thought it was the water pump, then the power steering pump, then the alternator, then the belts. I ended up replacing them all, trying to kill the embarassing noise. I ended up using a stethiscope to try and narrow it down, but it didn't help. I decided to replace the upper alternator bracket, and when I was installing the alternator I noticed that the outer groove on the crank pulley didn't quite line up with everything else. I replaced it with the one from the old engine, and now there is not a sound (except for the normal ones).

I'll probably have to replace them all, too, though I suspect the main problem to be the smog. (Which I won't replace, just remove.) Those noises are really embarasing. My rear brakes are also starting to sqeak, too. My car runs good and is in pretty good shape and looks real good (month old repainting, with SS hood and Z28 spoiler) it just makes some crappy noises. My noise sounds like it is coming from the area of the crank pulley. I'll look into it.
