Problem code #36....
I am having a problem code 36 come up on my 89 iroc. It says...burn off @maf, problem in trans. shift, fault in direct ignition, missing pulses in EST signal. I was wonding what is most likely wrong, or how to go about finding out which one it is. I don't have a scan tool or anything. thanks.

Shawn,
The only special scan tool you'll need to acquire is a GM OBD I ECM Diagnostic Trouble Code Retrieval Tool (commonly known as a paper clip to TGO members).
For GM DTCs through 1992, check this file for the decoding:
GM Error Codes.pdf.
You'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader to open/print the file - SEE LINK BELOW.
The '36' on your car (presuming it's a TPI) is for a failure of the MAF burnoff cycle. This is most often the result of a failing MAF burnoff relay or a poor connection at the MAF or relays. Check the electrical connections and ezchange the MAF power and burnoff relays to check them. If the error code turns from a '36' to a '34', the relay is probably bad.
