Distributor Gear
I know you cant use a distributer gear from a non-roller cam in a roller cam app, because it will eat the gear because of the different hardness.
But heres the deal.
I have a non-roller block I am putting together and I want to reuse my distributer. Will I run into problems with this distibuter gear in a non-roller application?
But - I need a new gear anyways - Will one say.. for the application of a 77 Z28 with a 350 work? (its about $60 cheaper.)

You don't want to run a bronze gear on a factory-type roller cam. There's too much misinformation out there about "roller cam distributor gear" requirements - bronze gear ain't required.
The factory says with regard to crate engines that you need to use a "melonized" gear, p/n 10456413, with factory type roller cams. I don't know what drive gear you were looking at, but from gmpartsdirect.com it's $20.74 (list $41.46).
As for using a factory roller cam equiped distributor (melonized gear) with a flat tappet cam, no problem.
Why do you say you need a different gear anyway?

i'm using a 1986 distributor from a hydraulic non-roller motor in a roller motor now, but i have a crane cam, no problems here.
even if the rumor is true, it says a roller distributor can be used on the older non-roller cams, not the other way around.

I'm using a ZZ3 take-off distributor in the '57, flat tappet cam. I swapped the gear over to my '86 CC distributor when I put the ZZ3 shortblock in the Camaro last month. Wear was normal. I would conclude there is no problem using the Melonized gear on a flat tappet cam. It is also possible the factory started using that gear before they started the roller cams.
I have a bud who used a bronze gear on a ZZ9 cam. It didn't last well, not sure how he intends to resolve that (he hasn't done much with the car in the last 2 years, health problems).

My stock gear looks pretty worn thats why I want to replace it, Everything else in the engine is brand new.
