Which engine should I get?

Ok, I am about ready to upgrade my 82 camaro to a nice 350 engine. There is just so many options out there.. I have about 3500 to spend, so what would you suggest? what things is a MUST in a new engine purchase, and what makes the biggest HP increases? I just want a engine that will wake up my 82, and will do decent in light to light races. What options do you suggest, and where should I buy it? please let me know all the goods, bads, and anything else. thanks guys. I still have not figured out why my car dies when I come to a stop, it runs fine until your less than 10mph, and then the RPM gague does wacko, such as it will go from 1500 rpm to 500 rpm and back and forth without even touching the gas pedal, and if you dont rev the gas , the car will turn off, it always turns right back on, but the idle still is insane, what can I try? please give any suggestions you may have..

Car: too many ...
is your engine TBI or TPI??? the 305 in my 89 rs is a TBI and I had the same exact problems. at stoplights the car would idle weird, jumping below 500 and back to 1000, back and fourth, and then die. I went out and bought throttle body cleaner and cleaned the TBI (have someone spray it down while you rev the engine). haven't had the problem since. guess the injectors or something got dirty and caused it to idle weird.

I'm not sure of the exact price, but you can get a ZZ4 shortblock for $2000, or the longblock for like $3000. These motors are around 350 hp I believe. I'm not sure on your tranny situation, but if it's a 5spd. you'd have to get a stronger one than stock and most likely have to rebuild an auto for the increased HP.

Yes, it is TBI, but I have always babbied this car, and I have cleaned the injectors many many times.. What other things can cause this? I did have a cam put in about 2 months ago, but it ran GREAT after the cam went in, so I dont know why it would all of a sudden go crazy, we are on a good start, any other ideas?

I would look into your TC lockup. Make sure it's working properly. An easy way to find this out is drive along in OD about 50 mph. Let off the gas and slightly tap the brake, the rpms should raise a couple of hundred.

Have the throttle position sensor checked. I had another car that would do the same thing and I changed the throttle position sensor and it still would die when I would slow down at a light. I took the car in and the mechanic checked the car and said it was the throttle position sensor. I told him I just put a new one in and I set it to the correct voltage. He said I probably got another bad one (I bought it from autozone). After he put another throttle position sensor in, the car ran fine.

My car does not have overdrive, what is the TC-lockup exactly and where is it if I need to change it.. I replaced my TPS about 3 months ago, that shouldnt be the prob there. My injectors are definately clean, I have always sprayed them with cleaner.. what about intake gasket? can that cause this? if its not sealed good can it cause this? thanks for all your help guys..

If you have an auto you'll have a Torque Converter. However, I'm not sure whether a TC lockups without OD. So that may not pertain to you.
