Oil cooler & heater core hose routing

I replaced the heater core in my GTA yesterday, and in typical fashion, I couldn't get that hose off that necks straight down and connects to the steel line that comes back up along the passenger side rail. I just bought a new piece of hose to bypass that steel line like I've done in the past, then I discovered that my GTA has the oil cooler, which T's off of that steel line. Instead of making a T, I removed the vacuum controlled valve that sits over the passenger valve cover and just wired the heater core and oil cooler in series. What purpose did that valve originally serve? What sort of negative aspects could develop from running the heater core and oil cooler in series?

That's was the coolant diverter valve. When you switch your dash controls to "hot" vaccum is being applied to that valve and it directs coolant through your heater core instead of straight into the radiator. There will be no negative effects to what you did. My oil cooler has been off the car for a few years now and recently I put the heater core back in loop. During the summer I bypass my heater core but in the winter I put it back in the loop
