HP incr. from cam change

I am pretty sure next spring I am swapping out my TBI and going with a carb. And to maximize it I am sawpping out the old peanut cam for somethin nicer. NOW, I saw the fastburn 385, then they took that engine and put in an LT4 hot cam in it and got 430HP, now concidering they went from a decent cam to a good cam and got 45 HP, what could I expenct from a good new cam? 45-60?
Especially if I swapped heads, not enough $ for that though.

I failed to mention that the engine is a 305 LO3

to get an increase of that nature, you need to increase rpm. A 305 is not really intended to turn rpms over 5500 without major expense. I would expect something more in the range of 20 additional hp on a cam alone.

Since you already have headers, it might be more than 20 HP, but probably less than 40. You might see 30-35 HP with the optimum cam selection. Something with about 212-218° of .050" duration on the intake, about 10° more than that on the exhaust, about .480" lift, ans a lobe separation of about 112° would be about as far as you'd want to go. Check out the Comp line of computer-compatible cams, the 264HR would be in that neighborhood.

Well shut my mouth:

Carcraft March 99.
A 305 with 80K miles, a performer rpm (they also tried a vic jr with similar results), headers and a XE268 made 270hp at 5100rpm. The engine gained 40hp from a stock cam to the XE268.

I guess rb wins another
