Cyl Head Swap and Casting Number

Hey,

My carbed 305 H.O. recenty went, actually it's on my 86' Monte Carlo SS so I had a local engine shop replace it with a 350.......My question is, I have a set of chevy small block heads layin around that are from a mid 70's truck (I think), 2.02 intake/1.60 exhaust and all that good stuff and I wanted to know if I can swap the heads currently on my engine with those heads.

The casting # from the 305 was:

14088551 which listed as 86-87 305's

and the new 350's # is:

14093638 which came up as 87-95 350's

I was just wondering If the older heads from the truck would work with the new engine........I know at most engine shops they just buy a long block and reuse the intake and exhaust manifolds, oil pan, valve covers, etc from the old engine. Is this true? If so does that mean that since the car's an 86' then any pre-87 small block 350 parts work with it...like the heads?

Thanks a lot.......any help is welcomed

They'll bolt onto the block, but.... The older 70s smog heads are garbage no matter what size valves are installed in them. I would not recommend doing that. They have poorly designed ports and several castings of them are thin in important places and prone to cracking. Also, your 638s take a late-model intake with the center bolts at a different angle, and they're center-bolt valve covers where the 70s junk is perimiter-bolt. And on top of all that, your 638s are 64cc chambers, where the 70s ones are 76cc, so you'll lose a good point of compression.

FYI, the 638 is what came on TPI 350s in F cars.
