Building 383 TPI motor - question....
Like the topic says I will, over the course of several months be building up a 383 - I have a question though. I want to keep it TPI so, other than different fuel components, what else do I need to have the motor be TPI? I have the harness already, and ECM (obviously, since I have a LB9, '87 IROC-Z), and I plan on porting the runners to hell
, and maybe different intake manifold. Anyway, back to original question - can I build the motor from the pan up either way, and then once I bolt on the heads, decide whether I will go carb or injected? My friend has built up tons of carb motors (Fords, of course, poor guy
) and we have decided on parts we will need, assuming carb.
One more thing - I may not be able to fully install it, so anyone know average going rates and total time to drop it in, including some tuning? Thanks a lot!

Mosly yes, but when it comes to the cam you'll want to decide before choosing it.
Carbs and TPI have completely different airflow characteristics and vacuum requirments. You will want to choose a cam to best suit whichever you choose. A different cam choice may possibly also entail different valvesprings and hardware.
Heads might also be an influence, but only if you want to go with a higher than 190cc aftermarket head that TPI will never keep up with. otherwise it doesn't matter.

Yep, you can take your ergonomically designed, space age, computer controlled, 4 door, cup holding map lighted split double wishbone split fold down retractable cargo covered moon roof piece of transportation and keep it. For I have felt the thunder. And I know the difference!"
