Freeze plugs

Anyone out there know about freeze plugs? I have some on my car that are leaking coolant, precisely I needed to know how to replace them. And how to get at them. Also if I need special tools?....Anybody?
Thanks in advance.

i drive them into the waterjacket then use a pry bar or vicegrips to wedge them out. i drive them in with a socket that fits snuggly inside the freeze plug lip. i use permatex sealer on the sealing surface before i drive them in.

I usually punch into them with a hammer and screwdriver, then pry it out with the screwdriver in the hole I made. This is usually enough, but if it's really stuck in there, the channelocks are required.
I also wipe a thin layer of permatex brown around the new plug and drive it home with a socket.

Like they said above but when using the socket if it's too big it can get stuck, iftoo little it can warp the freeze plug.A socket about 1/16 smaller than the freeze plug will work good. Try to install them with the eng. in the car can be a real pain, you have to start them square or they will **** an go in uneven.

If you have an '89 RS - Good Luck!! I just replaced mine. The plug is behind the starter, but to remove the starter you have to drop the exhaust at which point if your're as lucky as I am your exhaust manifold stud will break off at the collector. Which means you have to remove the manifold to replace the stud! Seriously, not too bad just time consuming. On the other hand the drivers side plug looks like cake tochange - easy access.
