fuel pump strainers, 1LE
fuel pump strainers, 1LE
In my ever stride for information on replacing my leaking gas tank.. I have learned the following.
There are 2 different strainers for a GM fuel pump. both are available from GM.
one is a strainer for all 3rd gens, the other is a 1LE only strainer. I am almost sure there is only 1 fuel pump. so can you put a 1LE strainer on a non 1LE? I have the part numbers, but not handy at the moment.
I'm thinking of ordering both strainers, and just diving in. if it fits great, if not only $14 spent. (The 1LE strainer is about double the price) Does anyone know what the difference is?
Now just some general info. as of a few years ago, there is only 1 replacement gas tank for all 3rd gens. this includes 1LE's, TTA, and V6 motors. all the same replacement tank.

Wow, that was quick!
Is the tank worth the $240? I know you race but I am having trouble justifying it.

how did you did up this old stuff? it's a year old
I had to buy a tank, mine was leaking all over the place. so yeah, $240 well spent. better than burning my car down, or even my house. fuel was leaking on the exhaust.
I did the fuel pump while it was apart. I did the exhaust cause it was rusted through.
now the car is pretty much perfect. no more fuel starvation problems.
Gm screwed 89 owners by not recalling the tanks like they did in 90. oh well.....

Hey, thanks for that info, Larry! I have to drop my gas tank to weld a 1/4 panel in, I was thinking of changing the fuel pump (for the third time) with a GM one instead of the Borg Warner one from Pep Boys. Are those GM part #s or Borg Warner or ...?

I used the search button!!! Ya know, that funny little icon that no one uses? Yeah that one
Since I have revamped my suspension it seems to keep bogging around hard turns. I just bought a GSS340 pump so I was debating upgrading the tank as well.
What is a pulsator?

I read a couple of posts saying that it will, but that is not the reason I bought the new pump. The new engine will not tolerate the stock pump.

The pulsator is the stupid useless thing between the pump outlet and the tube inlet. Looks like a little square. Supposedly GM puts it in between the two to "quiet the pump". Guess what though? The pulsator only attaches to those tubes with o-rings. If your pulsator gets old, or if you re-use a pulsator instead of buying new, the o-rings can leak!
First time I changed my pump, I didn't know that; I re-used the pulsator. When the pump died again 2 years later (damned borg warner, next time will be AC!), I didn't use a pulsator. I used a short piece of high pressure fuel line (included in the new fuel pump's box) and two small clamps. I didn't notice any problems, and if the pump is louder, I sure as hell can't tell. Do a search on the TPI board for "pulsator" and you'll find a ton of messages.
