Very hot engine.....

ok guys, today i drove the car for the first time. Well sorta. Ifd you call 200 yards a drive. I took it to the dead end and then back.

But in this time my oil leak showed it would provail, i am pretty sure my rear main seal is leaking puddles. MY drip goes onto the darn flexplate and then hits my y-pipe and blows bloke everywhere.

But thats not the problem.

Why were my headers red hot after a 20 second drive?

I see that my car uses way more fuel then its supposed to. But would that cause red hot headers? I am running 24# LT1 injectors with a 305 computer programmed for 19# injectors.

Right now the maf is disconnected, the TPS is connected, the IAC is connected, there is no O2 sensor to connect(need to buy one), and i really need prom tuning before i go out next time and i blow up.

But what isthe reason for red hot headers and hot coolant, after that drive, i ran it sitting still a little bit before hand for like 2 minutes, the coolant was at 120* F.

Why hot so quickly, will running rich make it hotter?

running too rich or timing too retarded will make headers glow red.

well timing being retarded is certainly not what i am experiencing. I am for sure having fuel problems however. There is no way around that. I am using 24# injectors with a 19# calibrated computer. It thinks its pulsing for 19# injectors.

Prom tuning is what i need next. As with a 89+ computer tune, so that there is no cold start injector usage, right now it sucks, becuase it takes a little cranking to get her going cold. I broke the cold start switch on the manifold a while back.

So running too rich will make red hot headers, ok, that problem is solved.

Will it make the engine run warmer too? Like i said, the engine wasn't even running very long and already the coolant was pretty darn hot, with the 305 is was never that hot that early.

is being rich really what causes red hot headers? today i heard it was lean conditions....

Whats the truth?

Running rich WILL NOT cause headers to glow red.
It is the opposite, running lean.Sounds like you have a very lean condition.
I know very little about fuel injection, but I know you should start by having all you sensors functioning. Also,be sure you are without vacumme leaks.
Lean conditions are very misunderstood.I've seen guys swap in leaner and leaner jets in a carb, thinking it was rich because it burned their eyes.In reality,a lean smell will burn your eyes much worse than if it's rich.

Remember,LEAN IS MEAN,FAT IS HAPPY!

Why would anyone say rich....

Yes too lean, possibly intake/vac leak or just mis tuned carb.

running pig rich at an idle will cause glowing headers.
