I put this new PS pump on my 91z28 TPI motor and it only worked for about 5 minutes then just stopped. the pump is on a serpentine belt setup. Could I have gotten air in the lines. they where disconneted for about 3 monthes. How do you bleed the PS system.

Fill the pump up; turn the wheels all the way one way, it may drain the pump; fill it up again; turn them all the way the other way; fill it up again; run it a few seconds; turn it off; wait a half hour or so for the foamed fluid to separate back out; repeat as necessary. There's no bleeder screws or anything like that like brakes or something.

I always use the method of raising the car off the ground (mainly to relieve stress on the steering system during bleeding but it also saves on the tires ) than fill the reservoir up and turn the steering wheel lock to lock about 20 times - recheck fluid level and fill as necessary. Turn the wheel lock to lock again about 20 times. This is all with the engine off! Recheck the fluid level and add as necessary again. Now start the engine and turn it from lock to lock again about 20 times. Lower the car and you should be good to go. I have used other methods but this is the fastest one and most reliable one out there. It works by allowing fluid to flow into every passage and allowing the air that may be stuck in the system to work it's way up and into the top of the reservoir without being airated (sp) by the pump itself. It works every time for me ......... and it's in more than one GM Service Manual..........

Good Luck....

UPDATE: i drained the fluid from the pump and started over. I disconnected the lines and drained them too. I turned the wheels back and forth with lines off to get all old fluid out. i then put everything back together and filled the pump. i left the cap off and turned the wheels back and forth but the fluid in the pump never went down. could my steering box be clogged up. is there a way to clean these out.

How many times did you turn it back and forth? Like I was saying before, I always turn the steering wheel lock to lock about 20 times. If you did turn it that much and the level still wouldn't go down, you may have some sort of a clog in one of the lines or the gear itself. But I would say that a clog like that is very unlikely. Stick with the bleeding procedure by turning the steering lock to lock some more and it should work....... it always does for me..???

i must have turned my wheel about 100 times. i took the lines off to and made sure they where clean. i did have the line off the box for awhile and maybe something got stuck in there. is there a way to blow it out

Not sure about blowing it out... I've never done that. Maybe try pouring some fluid into the gear itself before you put the lines on it.... Might help.... Are you turning the wheels back and forth with the tires off the ground? The service manuals all say that doing it without a load on the system (ie tires off the ground) helps to get the fluid into the system...

I'm kinda at a loss here too...???
