Which K&N should I get?

Which K&N Air Filter should i get? The 12x2.5 in. OEM replacement element or a 14x3 drop base air cleaner?

This topic get a lot a play here. I don't know what intake you have, carb or throttle body. It seems that most of the people here use the 14x3 air cleaner. I got a 9x3 because I wanted more of the top of the engine to show. If you have a throttle body, there is a spacer ring on top of the throttle body. Remove it, and the 3" filter clears your hood no problem. Be sure and get a flat base air cleaner.

First, i have an all stock LG-4,which is a carbed motor.

Yes, our cars came with 12x2.5 cleaners...Inside the snorkle cleaner assembly.

Would a drop base be more efficient? Im thinking about going with an Edelbrock Performer or Weiand Stealth intake.

This just my opinion, but after racing for quite a number of years, even if it was 25 yrs ago, it seems like the thinking has always been that the more free space for breathing above the carb, tbi, injectors, etc., the better the engine breathes. Better air flow into the intake and such. Not to mention the extra surface area a taller filter gives. A drop base would be trying to pull air from below the top of your carb. Can't be to good for smooth air flow. I'm certainly open to other opposing ideas, never have been able to know everything.

i imagine drop base is only for applications where the clearance is needed...

You could always put an air Xtreme lid on it, K&N's filter lid, that would provide air coming from the top straight into the carb.
